JG Hydraulic | Parker
Hybrid power helps Saraka reduce emissions

CHALLENGE:

PRODUCTION PROBLEMS ARISING FROM UNSTABLE PUMPS

JG Hydraulic’s customer, a leading Swedish packaging manufacturer, was facing increasing production

problems caused by hydraulic pumps powering four feeder screws, delivering wood chippings to the pulp boiler. The old pumps needed constant manual adjustments and frequent maintenance.

SOLUTION:

PARKER PVPLUS PUMPS

JG Hydraulic installed a series of Parker Hannifin PVplus pumps, along with modern Parker directional

valves, pipes, hoses and connectors. The new pumps maintain the set speed perfectly, independent of the load – the problems were solved.

BENEFITS:

BETTER PRODUCTION QUALITY AND REDUCED ODOUR EMISSIONS

Along with savings from not having to adjust the pump speed anymore, production quality has been improved by a perfectly even chip feed. The occurrence of gas pockets is also greatly reduced, resulting in significantly lower odour emissions to the environment. Read the whole success story

JG HYDRAULIC, SWEDEN

PARKER PVPLUS PUMPS IMPROVE PRODUCTION QUALITY AND REDUCE EMISSIONS

By replacing outdated equipment with Parker’s pumps and valves, JG Hydraulic has managed to improve production quality at a large paper mill significantly.

Drastically reduced odour emissions and maintenance costs are welcome added bonuses.

''We have performed quite a few successful installations at this factory, and this time was no exception.

By replacing outdated equipment with Parker’s modern pumps and valves, we managed to solve their wood chip feeder problems.

The new pumps respond instantly and deliver exactly the flow needed at any given time, eliminating constant manual adjustments.

This means a better end product, along with reduced odour emissions thanks to fewer gas pockets.''

Uneven feed causing trouble

Sweden is a major player in the packaging industry, with several large plants producing different types of carton for various food and beverage applications. The main raw materials used are wood chippings.

At one of these factories, four large feeder screws are used to transport the chippings to a large pulp boiler. The feeder speed is regulated and should be kept constant to provide an even product quality. Unwanted variations could spoil the pulp.

But an even feed was not the case anymore, as the pumps powering the feeder screws required ever more frequent manual input – a result of old technology combined with increasing wear. Service requirements were also on the rise.

JG Hydraulic to the rescue

The factory in question has its own maintenance personnel, but none of them are dedicated hydraulics experts. In these cases, their go-to problem solver is Jonas Grelsson at JG Hydraulic in Sundsvall. Jonas and his crew know the plant well and had no problem finding a solution that would meet and exceed the needs.

JG Hydraulic is a second-generation family-owned business. They work with all kinds of industrial hydraulics all over Sweden and have been a certified Parker Distributor since 2009. They are used to solving difficult problems, but this time the solution was quite obvious. There was no doubt that Parker’s heavy duty PV180 axial pumps and matching D91 directional valves would produce the desired results.

“When we are all done by early 2022, we will have installed eight PVplus pumps and seven valves, including just one pump and one valve as spares left on site. If a pump needs servicing, their engineers will just make an easy swap and send the faulty one to us for a rebuild. But I don’t think that will be necessary any time soon, as these products are very robust and hardwearing”, says Jonas Grelsson.

Unexpected added benefits

There is no doubt that JG’s mission was a resounding success:

“Cost-wise, they save a little bit on energy when the pumps are running at exactly the right speed at all times, and quite a bit more on maintenance and parts for the foreseeable future. Also, they no longer need to monitor the pump speed constantly, which frees up time for more productive work in the control room. The even chip feed provides the boiler with ideal conditions, making it easier for them to maintain the desired pulp quality and thus also the quality of the end product. A perfect feed also results in fewer gas pockets in the boiler, which reduces emissions of unpleasant odours to the environment significantly. That was a somewhat unexpected but very welcome bonus, so our customer is really pleased with the outcome”, concludes Jonas Grelsson.
