Most global power plants use steam turbines. Their steam is produced mostly by boilers burning coal, weighted by China and India, and those fired by other fuels are much smaller segments. Coal-fired plants produce more than one-third of the world’s electricity but are slowly being replaced. Some are being converted to natural gas while utilities committed to coal can purchase boilers with “ultra-supercritical technology” (USC) that are cleaner, more efficient and burn less coal.
