CHALLENGE
The customer, a national company working within the utilities sector, has ambitious net zero goals and Rotec Hydraulics, as its sole winch design, supply and service provider was keen to support.
SOLUTION
An electrical winch system, utilising Parker components, that produces the same amount of power as its hydraulic equivalent, whilst meeting the client’s bespoke operational requirements, including proportional speed control and two operation modes - lift and self-recovery
BENEFITS
Rotec Hydraulics’ electric winch system reduces CO2 emissions, supporting net zero goals. The system offers controlled ascent and descent capabilities, customisable design, robust components and unlimited run time.
“As a key supplier and integrated partner for over 20 years, Rotec’s ability to navigate challenges is exceptional and their delivery of planned maintenance is consistently excellent.”
Fleet Technical Specialist, Utility Company
Rotec Hydraulics, a certified Parker distributor located in the UK, has innovatively designed and developed the first-of-its-kind electric winch system in response to a request from a client. The customer, a national company working within the utilities sector, has ambitious net zero goals and Rotec, as its sole winch design, supply and service provider was keen to support.
Rotec’s in-house design team embarked upon a R&D project specifically dedicated to produce an electric winch with the equivalent performance and functionality of the hydraulic winch that the client currently uses on their 500 strong fleet of Isuzu D-Max vehicles.
Despite other winch providers saying an electric winch system capable of proportional speed control lifting 1.5 tons and dragging 3.6 tonnes and not overheating was impossible, Rotec are pleased to reveal their new offer to the market.
This particular example features two operational modes (lifting and pulling). The proportional speed control allows for safe, controlled ascent and descent of the winch system when lifting. Operators have reported that the infinite winch speed control using joysticks in cab and/or remote pendant have allowed for more precise and accurate placing of the load than the previous hydraulic winch delivered.
The integrated thermal management of both motor and motor inverter along with natural air cooling of the motor inverter, means that Rotec’s electric winch system has an unlimited run time.
The electric winch system is fully customisable and Rotec is keen to support their client with electrifying all of their winch systems, including those fitted to MAN lorries and Marooka tracked dumpers.
Rotec’s electrical winch system reduces CO2 emissions as a result of being powered by a lithium battery, rather than the vehicle’s diesel engine. The vehicle engine does not need to be turned on in order to operate the winch, unlike its hydraulic counterpart.
The electric winch’s carbon emissions are minimised with the only emissions being those generated when the vehicle is in motion and it is charging the winch system’s lithium battery.
As demonstrated in this case, Parker Distributors are not just suppliers and stockists of parts but can provide system solution design to meet your specific needs.
Winner of Manufacturer of the Year 2023 at the Somerset Business Awards, Rotec can provide tailored winch system designs and offers design, manufacture, fitting and on-site servicing and repair service backed with excellent customer service.
Customers can customise rated line pull, line speed or rope type and capacity to optimise their operations. High quality, robust components mean all Rotec winch systems are suitable for operating in challenging environments.
Rotec’s innovative electric winch system has enabled its customer to not only cut emissions but work smarter, more accurately and increase productivity with proportional control capability and/or remote monitoring options.
“This project is an example of how Rotec Hydraulics is spearheading electrification within the fluid power industry to enable decarbonisation of the hardest-to-abate industry sectors.
The addition of Parker components, including IQAN technology, has made the challenge of producing the same, if not enhanced, performance compared to the equivalent hydraulic winch system solution possible.”
