When Purpose is Tested by FireCLEVELAND, January 23, 2023—There are few applications for Parker products and engineering that are more critical than fire suppression and water control. When faced with a fire, one of the fundamental tactical functions of an engine company is to establish adequate water supply, which often means transporting large volumes of water long distances through heavy duty, large diameter hoses.

Whether firefighters are working to maximize that water supply or lay and recover the high-capacity hoses, the pump on the fire engine is a critical component. That's where Parker comes in.

When fire protection vehicle and equipment manufacturer Suzhou Jieda became dissatisfied with the compromised quality and unreliable performance of a competitor's solution, they called on Parker China Sales Company. Where others had experienced setbacks, systems engineer David Li and the mobile sales team saw opportunity.

"The boss at Suzhou Jieda was a firefighter previously. He knew so much about the conditions, the challenges, the equipment and how it should work," explains Li. "So, of course, reliability was paramount to him."

Li and the engineering team had worked on similar projects. They knew what kind of performance to expect from Parker components and exactly what to recommend:

"For the long distance water supply truck, I thought of our PV+ 180cc Piston Pump first because it's a reliable hydraulic pump. We proposed it to the customer and they had many questions about specs and shipping to China," Li says. "They examined all the data, we made a prototype and moved into the testing phase."

Following that very first introduction in 2010, deploying the pump on Suzhou Jieda fire engines was a yearlong process. Soon after, the same customer approached Parker about a solution for its water hose trucks which not only pump high volumes of water but also lay down and recover the hose.

For this application, Li and the team chose Parker's T1 technology out of Sweden, a hydraulic pump plus a five section directional valve. The new systems not only enable firefighters to deliver high volumes of water to the fire scene but also to lay and recover hose using less labor and equipment. And that's an engineering breakthrough that leads to a better tomorrow for firefighters— and for all of us.

"Parker is very competitive in even the most-demanding applications," summarizes Li. "Over the last decade, this customer has purchased more than 300 pcs PV180 pumps. We're very proud that they trust Parker and value our reputation, our reliability and our service."
