Facing mounting environmental pressures, oil refiners are starting to address increased greenhouse gas emissions with production of renewable energy and through plans for CCUS.

Innovations Downstream

Oil refineries are the third-largest stationary emitter of greenhouse gases in the world, contributing about 4% of all global CO2 emissions. Facing mounting environmental pressures, refiners are starting to address this with increased production of renewable energy and through plans for CCUS, carbon capture, utilization and storage. One of the largest examples of CO2 utilization is for enhanced oil recovery (EOR), where it is injected into oil-bearing rocks, facilitating their release of oil.
